Irrigation Technician

As an Irrigation Technician with The Butchart Gardens; you will be an integral member of the Gardening Department with the primary responsibility of maintaining our extensive irrigation system. At various times of the year your daily duties will include working within the Gardening Department helping to maintain the highest horticultural standards while assisting with many aspects of garden maintenance. The successful candidate will be involved in (but not limited to) the following duties: DUTIES: Working under the direction of Gardening Management, Gardening Supervisors and Water Delivery Specialist: • Carry out duties within tight timelines and often under pressure to minimize disruption to visitors. • Operate maintain and make improvements to extensive irrigation water system • Install new and repair existing irrigation lines, sprinklers and non-functioning irrigation systems • Repair and maintain over 200 sprinkler zones, including automated clocks, vales etc. • Maintain an adequate inventory of irrigation parts on site • Winterizing and charging irrigation system to prevent frost damage and prepare for irrigation season • Ensure compliance of CRD Cross Connection Control Program and maintenance/testing of related equipment • Coordinate and program sprinkler clocks to ensure efficiency in irrigation and optimize water delivery throughout The Gardens • Design and make alterations to sprinklers, drip systems, water lines and drainage as requested by the Gardening Department e.g., rearrangement of paths, beds and plant growth etc. • Liaise with Gardening supervisors to coordinate optimal irrigation to specific areas • Maintain safe work practices • Work with other departments and staff in non-plumbing related activities as required to ensure the smooth operation of The Gardens REQUIREMENTS: • Understanding of and adherence to WHMIS and WorkSafe BC Regulations. • Valid driver’s license with clean drivers abstract • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Possess analytical/problem solving skills. • Valid cross connection control tester certificate would be an asset, or willing to become certified • Experience in irrigation or other pipe trades would be an asset • Experience with pools, ponds and fountains would be an asset • Knowledge of irrigation systems would be an asset • Ability to work unsupervised. • Ability to operate numerous types of mobile equipment would be an asset • Experience with landscape project design and installation would be an asset • Must be capable of physical work in inclement weather. (Physical assessment required). • Follow company policies and procedures and support the management team This is a year-round full-time position. Shifts will be primarily Monday to Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm, (Summer season), and 7:00am – 3:30pm. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work should be expected. We offer competitive wages starting from $31.46/hour depending on experience and qualifications, 3 weeks’ vacation, (plus an additional 2 weeks paid staff holiday during The Gardens closure each year), flexibility for time off, health and dental benefits, Health Care Spending Account and matched RRSP benefits, following the 6-month probationary period.
