On August 13th, 2024, it was reported that HUNDREDS of British Columbians had been taken advantage of by scammers pretending to be BC Hydro. Several media organizations were quick to leap into action in order to help inform the public. They attributed the success of the scam to the scammers sounding just like BC Hydro by using their "same set of questions" to "verify identity." But did you know? BC Hydro’s “set of questions” might be violating the Privacy Act. Under this act, organizations are PROHIBITED from collecting personal information unless it's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Some British Columbians have indicated that they believe BC Hydro has asked for more personal information than required, raising concerns about the lawfulness of BC Hydro's policies. This apparent practice of needlessly collecting personal information makes it difficult for people to tell if they are speaking with the real BC Hydro or scammers. Especially those who have recently immigrated to Canada, the elderly, or those who may be suffering from cognitive impairments. After years of 1 star google reviews and complaints about poor customer service, I believe that people are reasonably having a hard time telling BC Hydro apart from the actual scammers these days. These privacy rules were put in place not only to protect British Columbians, but also to prevent scams from taking place in general. This is important because we need to keep money out of the hands of these scammers, as it goes to support things like torture camps. (See the attached image of KK Park Myanmar, close to the Thailand border, a factory prison dominated by criminal organizations that kidnap people and brutally force them to commit online scams, usually using cryptocurrencies for increased partial anonymity.) These scam camps are part of the reason why Police are not able to do anything about these scammers, which is why PREVENTION is so important. These camps aren't trying to remain anonymous to protect themselves either; everyone already knows exactly who and where they are. Instead, they worry about anonymity to protect the identities of the people who hire them as a proxy. Just for example, lets say that one of our political parties has a campaign group that needs money and wants to scam people to get it. All they would have to do is ask BC Hydro to provide poor customer service (which they already seem to do quite proudly,) then hire the scammers via the dark web once customers' ability to protect their personal information is compromised. If this were the case, then it would make sense that the RCMP could never catch them, because police are trained to think stereotypically and would never suspect groups like these of committing such serious crimes. So what can we do about it? The best way YOU can help is to first, file a police report if you are a victim of this scam and haven't already. Then please contact me here via email with a brief description of what happened. I will then have the lawyer who is putting this class action lawsuit together reach out to you as soon as possible. If you were not scammed but did have a negative customer service experience with BC Hydro related to the unauthorized collection of personal information, I would also be interested to know any details that you can provide. Thank you for your participation! Please feel free to ask if you have any questions at all.
